코로나19 대유행의 여파에 따른 불확실성이 끝나지 않고 계속되는 가운데 비트코인이 상승 곡선을 그리며 다시 주목을 받자 디지털 화폐의 미래에 대한 논란이 일고 있다.

비트코인이 안전자산으로서 금을 대체할 수 있을지에 대해서는 의견이 분분하다.

일각에서는 금값이 정점을 찍었고 단기 이익보다는 안정을 추구하는 기관투자자들이 전과 비교하여 비트코인을 더 받아들이기 시작했기에 가능하고 말한다.

반대 측은 가격 변동성이 큰 투기성 자산인 비트코인은 여러 측면에서 '운용 리스크’가 있기에 이러한 주장은 가치가 없다고 주장한다.
