ANA plans to cut about 3,500 jobs in three years as Japan’s largest airline operator braces for its biggest-ever annual loss due to a plunge in demand driven by the coronavirus pandemic, the Yomiuri daily reported.

일본 최대 항공사인 전일본공수(ANA)가 코로나바이러스 대유행으로 인한 항공 수요 급감으로 인해 사상 최대 규모의 연간 손실 대비에 나서며, 3년 안에 약 3,500명을 감원할 계획이라고 요미우리신문이 보도했다.


The job losses are part of ANA’s broader business restructuring plan to be announced on Tuesday, as it scrambles to cut fixed costs in anticipation of a prolonged downturn in travel demand, the Yomiuri said on Sunday.

ANA가 여행 수요의 장기 침체를 예상해 고정비 절감을 서두르고 있는 만큼 이번 일자리 감소는 화요일 발표될 사측의 광범위한 구조조정 계획의 일환이라고 요미우리신문이 일요일 밝혔다.


ANA, which had a group workforce of 43,500 as of last year, plans to achieve the job cut target by the year ending in March 2023 through outplacement programs and a hiring freeze, according to the paper.

지난해 기준 4만3500명의 인력을 보유하고 있던 ANA그룹은 2023년 3월 말까지 재취업 주선 프로그램과 채용 중단을 통해 감원 목표를 달성할 계획이라고 이 신문은 전했다.


As short-term measures, ANA is considering temporarily dispatching some of its workforce to several other firms including Toyota Motor and selling 30 of its costly wide-body aircraft, the Yomiuri added.

ANA는 단기 대책으로 도요타자동차 등 다른 기업들에 자사 인력 일부를 임시로 파견하고 값비싼 대형 항공기 30대를 매각하는 방안을 검토하고 있다고 요미우리는 덧붙였다.


Forecast to suffer a net loss of around 500 billion yen ($4.8 billion) for this fiscal year to March, ANA has turned to billions of dollars in loans and a government tourism campaign to weather the slump in air travel.

올해 회계연도가 끝나는 내년 3월까지 약 5,000억엔의 순손실을 볼 것으로 예상되는 ANA는 항공 여행의 부진을 극복하기 위해 수십억 달러의 대출과 일본 정부의 관광 캠페인에 의존해왔다.


Separately, the Nikkei business daily reported on Sunday that ANA’s local rival, Japan Airline Co., was expected to report an operating loss of about 85 billion yen for the July-September quarter.

이와는 별도로, 니혼게이자이 신문(닛케이)은 토요일 ANA의 경쟁사인 일본항공(JAL)이 7~9월 분기에 약 850억엔의 영업손실을 기록할 것으로 예상한다고 보도했다.


JAL was mired in the red as passenger traffic on international flights plunged 97 percent in the quarter, the Nikkei said. (Reuters)

JAL은 해당 분기 국제선 여객기 운항이 97% 급감하면서 적자에 빠졌다고 닛케이는 설명했다.
