U.S. President-elect Joe Biden urged Americans to wear masks, Monday, to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and not consider it a “political statement,” as he named the scientists who will lead his administration's response to the pandemic.

조 바이든 미국 대통령 당선인은 월요일 '바이든 행정부'의 코로나19 대응을 이끌 과학자들을 지명하며, 자국민들에게 코로나19의 확산을 막기 위한 마스크 착용과 이를 '정치적 발언'으로 간주하지 말 것을 촉구했다.


Mindful of a nationwide surge in coronavirus infections, the Democrat said that after a divisive election Americans must unite around a “shared goal” of defeating the virus.

전국적으로 코로나바이러스 감염이 급증하는 것을 염두에 두고, 바이든은 분열된 대선 후에 미국인들이 코로나바이러스를 물리치겠다는 '공통된 목표'를 중심으로 힘을 합쳐야 한다고 말했다.


“So please, I implore you, wear a mask,” Biden said in Wilmington after he and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris held a virtual briefing with his newly named Transition COVID-19 Advisory Board.

바이든은 이날 윌밍턴에서 카멀라 해리스 부통령 당선인과 함께 새로 지명된 '코로나19 자문단'과 온라인 기자회견을 한 뒤 "그러니 제발 마스크를 착용해 달라"고 호소했다.


“Do it for yourself, do it for your neighbor,” he added. “A mask is not a political statement, but it is a good way to start putting the country together.”

그는 "자신을 위해, 이웃을 위해 착용해야 한다"라며 "마스크 착용은 정치적 발언이 아니며 미국을 하나로 묶기 시작하는 좋은 방법"이라고 덧붙였다.


Biden, 77, has routinely worn face coverings over the past several months, while President Donald Trump has largely eschewed them and held open-air rallies where thousands of supporters crowded together, often maskless.

바이든(77)은 지난 몇 달 동안 일상에서 마스크를 착용했지만, 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 마스크 착용을 피했고, 마스크를 쓰지 않은 수천 명의 지지자가 모인 야외 선거유세를 벌였다.


Scientists in Trump's own administration have warned that Americans must embrace mask-wearing as they face a surging pandemic with colder months ahead.

트럼프 행정부의 전문가들은 미국인들이 향후 몇 달간 추워질수록 급증하는 감염병 대유행에 직면하고 있는 만큼 마스크 착용을 받아들여야 한다고 경고했다.


“We're still facing a very dark winter,” Biden said.

바이든은 "우리는 여전히 매우 어두운 겨울을 맞이할 것"이라고 밝혔다.


Biden spoke shortly after U.S. company Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech said a vaccine they had jointly developed had so far proven 90 percent effective in preventing infections in ongoing Phase 3 trials ― news that cheered scientists, politicians and markets.

바이든의 발언은 미국 화이자, 독일 바이오엔테크가 공동으로 개발한 백신이 현재 진행 중인 임상 3상에서 감염예방에 90% 효과가 있다는 것이 입증되었다는 발표 직후에 나왔다.


The president-elect applauded the announcement, but insisted a mask still remains “the most potent weapon” against the virus, and that “today's news does not change that urgent reality.”

바이든 당선인은 이 같은 발표에 박수를 보냈지만, 마스크가 여전히 바이러스에 가장 강력한 무기라며 "오늘의 뉴스가 우리가 처한 긴급한 현실을 바꾸지는 않는다"라고 주장했다.
